Rugar 9 Mm - Ruger Security-9 Review: A 9mm Pistol for a Great Price Col Ben reviews the Ruger Security-9 9mm pistol for under $300. Is it a decent price? Is this weapon accurate and reliable for personal protection? Ben examines the pros and cons of this budget gun to help you decide if it's right for you. He used his own criteria, looked at the features and specifications of the gun, and expressed his personal opinions and preferences. This can serve as a starting point for your budget selection research to save you time and choose the gun with the best value for you.
I've been reviewing a lot of 9mm pistols lately, and last month I posted my best 9mm pistols in 5 categories here. But, some have asked, what about a list of recommended and reliable 9mm pistols under $300? who will be reliable and do the job of personal protection. So I researched, shot, and tested some basic "no frills and features" pistols and came up with a list of the best 9mm pistols under $300. It won't hurt the wallet and offers basic functionality with enough firepower for self-defense. There are a few 9mms under $300, but I'd just like to recommend which, according to my 10 criteria, I have no doubts about their accuracy, reliability, and value for the price paid. Remember, I am reviewing VALUE pistols which can be had for less than $300 after purchase. I heed what other trainers have told me, what I've learned from my research, and the opinions of people I respect, the military and law enforcement. However, of course, my budget list is highly subjective and therefore yours will be biased based on your experience, opinion and subjective criteria. One of my finalists was the Ruger Security-9 and here is my evaluation and field test.
Rugar 9 Mm
Ruger's Security-9 pistol uses the same reliable "safe action" system as Ruger's successful LCP II with its sharp, short, smooth trigger. The Ruger Security-9 system uses internal sealed hammers instead of striker bars, which helps make sliding shelves easier. It is double action pre-cocked and hammer-fired. For safety, the Ruger Security-9 features a trigger safety, a manual thumb safety, and a (hidden) hammer catch that prevents the gun from firing unless you pull the trigger. It has a cocked barrel lock like the Browning. This solid build value pistol has features typically found in much more expensive pistols and doesn't feel "cheap". The hammer, like the striker in a striker-fired rifle, is tilted back slightly as the slide moves backwards. Pulling the trigger completes a cycle of cocking the hammer to fire the gun. It gives the feel of a single action type trigger with a short and sharp reset point when being a double action pistol.

Below I provide the dimensions, specs, and features of the Ruger Security-9 so you can see what the dimensions and dimensions of the popular but more expensive Glock 19 are similar to those listed here. Then I will present my ten criteria and the results of field tests and evaluation of their performance and characteristics against my criteria. You can compare their features and ratings to my top 21 concealed carry guns in my book Concealed Carry and Handgun Essentials. You can add or subtract my criteria to meet your needs and preferences. I've been dying to shoot a budget Security-9 pistol and compare it factor by factor to my other quality compact 9mm to see if it actually ranks among my concealed carry pistols and if it does I'd even recommend it as a budget pistol.
Thanks to Ruger for loaning me this pistol for testing and evaluation purposes. Please know that I am not on their payroll, not paid for this article, and not influenced to say anything specific about guns. I want to be honest and frank with my opinions and ideas because I see a gun to genuinely help people. I especially want to know how accurate it is without any changes? How heavy is the trigger press? Is the trigger smooth and sharp? What about the reset interval for the next shot? Is it reliable? What are the advantages, disadvantages and special features? Are there any issues or concerns that would prevent me from carrying this weapon? What would I change about this gun? Is this a weapon that I would recommend for concealed carry and home defense?
First, I would like to present the specifications and some features of the Ruger Security-9 9mm pistol. Then I'll provide my skin recommendations for Security-9 (with a special discount code), followed by the 10 criteria by which I evaluate all weapons. Finally, I will provide my analysis and how I rated the gun based on each of my criteria to recommend or not recommend specifically. As always, set your own criteria and priorities, do your own research, and double-check data, information, etc. me with yours, for your own very personal selection process.

Here are ten criteria and factors I use to evaluate any handgun, so I'll use them for the Ruger Security-9 pistol. In addition to my criteria, other mental characteristics may appeal to some. As an example:
So, I'm merging this into my latest miscellaneous benchmark. I have to admit that all gun selection decisions involve swapping, but I really wanted all my criteria met. I assign each of my ten criteria a possible total score out of ten for a possible total score of 100. You can certainly add your own additional criteria, preferences, or subtract mine.
Note that there are several features, characteristics, pros and cons, and personal criteria to consider and make your own trade-offs based on your preferences, preferences, defined needs, and usage.
Picked Up The Ruger American 9mm, And I Am Not Disappointed.
To determine how the rifle would turn and handle various payloads, I used quality Sig Sauer Elite V-Crown JHP ammunition in 115, 124, and 147 weights and some in 115 grain FMJ. And about 50-60 rounds of American Eagle 115 grain FMJ I have bought. I only fired about 200 rounds evaluating this gun to decide if it was a solid gun and worth carrying discreetly. I wanted to determine if it would do the job at 10 yards as an economy rifle without all the "whistles and bells". I get the information I need after shooting. Below are my ratings for each of my ten criteria for Security-9 for my covert carry purposes. I wanted to specifically test their reliability and accuracy. I put the gun through its paces and thoroughly inspected it for misfire, stopping and performance with JHP ammo and FMJ bullets. I want to thank Sig Sauer for providing 150 different rounds of Elite Performance ammunition for Security-9 to test and evaluate.
The Ruger Security-9 in 9mm has excellent ergonomics. The slim fork feels comfortable in the hands of me, my wife, and two other trainers. It was comfortable and had a shallow bore axis which helped reduce recoil and prevent muzzle twist. I can hold and operate the gun just fine with the right grip texture. My pinky wasn't dangling under the 15-round magazine when I got it - no pinky dangling. The ergonomics of this gun are very good for the price of the gun. And the two included 15-round metal magazines give me extra rounds and peace of mind. The clips and corners are perfectly rounded and fit me perfectly. I can easily reach all controls. The slide was easy for my wife and I and the recoil and muzzle rise were very controllable. My wife also likes the ergonomics and shooting.
What I didn't like was the small size and difficulty of the manual
