Chiefs Number 57 - After asking for a historic contract and commitment, confusion doesn't justify Orlando Brown Jr.'s place on the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive line.
Regardless of the style, scheme or direction of the game, the Kansas City Chiefs left the hopeful franchise Orlando Brown has gone from being an embarrassment to a liability in 2022. Due to his average performance, the team is disappointed with the current game plan and attitude. 2023 and beyond.
Chiefs Number 57
Brown's contract negotiations were one of the biggest stories of the Chiefs' offseason. After Kansas City plunked down a lot of draft capital to acquire him, Brown had transition pains in 2021. At the start of the season he looked like a bust, but turned around in the second half. The excuse of a slow start was plausible. Brown came from Baltimore's run-heavy scheme to Kansas City's polar opposite, pass-happy system. Additionally, he still moved to left tackle after being Baltimore's primary right tackle. There were several reasons for Brown's disappointing first year in Kansas City.

In the year His performance in 2021 didn't stop the Chiefs from tagging Brown when they could. The move has been made and it still makes sense. The Chiefs didn't have another roster option at left tackle, and the Chiefs didn't have any elite pass blockers available through the draft. In addition, both Brown and the Chiefs have indicated they are willing to negotiate a long-term deal when Brown is ready. In June 2022, Brough asked first agent Michael Porner to represent him. Ultimately, despite Kansas City's historic offer, the Chiefs and Brown's camp were unable to reach an agreement.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs offered Brown "the highest signing bonus and average annual [rate of a left tackle] on a six-year contract." He added that they were close, but the safety during the contract wasn't enough, according to Poerner.
ESPN reported that the Chiefs' final six-year, $139 million deal for Brown included a $30.25 million signing bonus and $95 million over the first five years of the deal. The offer was more than generous, but the Chiefs expected Brown Patrick Mahomes to be a concussion backup.
Bad blood appeared between Brown and the Chiefs after contract negotiations were completed. "This is not the type of guy we traded for," said people in Kansas City's front office, saying Brown was not a team player and difficult to work with. Of course, these statements are unknown and should be treated with caution. But where there is a lot of smoke, there is fire.

Both sides have moved on to the regular season, but there are still ramifications of Brown's extensive deals going nowhere. Every move Kansas City made last season was because of the Brown deal. General manager Brett Veach likes to pull back contracts. It metaphorically kicks the financial can. However, Brown's $16.7 million in cap space emptied the Chiefs' war chest and took a good chunk of the Chiefs' cap space. without extension. The Chiefs were unable to re-sign veterans like cornerback Charvarius Ward, defensive end Melvin Ingram or safety Tyrann Mathieu. While some players may not return, Kansas City's absence has turned it into a certainty.
The Chiefs could use that flex position to keep Ingram, add another veteran wide receiver or bolster a young defensive unit. But Brown's franchise tag made those moves unlikely. If the Browns remain dominant this season, the franchise tag could look like a bargain. However, Brown won't even get paid less than he did this summer.
After Week 4, the Browns had one of the worst offensive games in the league. His nine sacks are a league-worst mark, while he ranks fourth with five quarterbacks, pressures and sacks allowed. Again, take it for what it's worth, but Brown's 54.9 PFF pass blocking ranks 48th among offensive tackles.

Of course, Brown still has time to turn things around. With 13 regular season games remaining, the Browns have competed against some of the best playoff players in the league so far. The schedule is a little more forgiving because of Brown's one-on-one play, but the reality is that Brown looks like the weak link on the offensive line. A positive change in performance will make this season's negotiations even more boring.
The only reason Brown could be a hindrance to the Chiefs' future plans is because they have to spend more time and money on those negotiations. If the Browns want to, they can have another offseason with free agent signings, extensions or trades. While it's too early to decide Brown's future in Kansas City, Veach will have to make a decision at some point. The start of a new season often brings veterans who are asked to find work elsewhere. Who are the Kansas City Chiefs players whose roster is in doubt?

Every year we see veterans find new groups before or on the day of the slaughter. A player who entered training camp as a rookie is now out of a job. Have injuries affected your ability to get the buzz? Perhaps the new player is cheap and will help the Kansas City Chiefs save money against the salary cap.
On the Chiefs team, there will be veteran players that fans expect to make the final 53-man roster for one reason or another. Who are the unfit players?
I'm not saying the next four players are definitely gone. They are simply players whose "seats" are hotter, or should be, than their fans expect or want.

Dorian Odan was the player most expected to be at the end of the 2018 season. Despite the limited playing time, there were moments of hope on defense, and there was hope for more to come for the Clemson product.
Initially, the Chiefs trading Darron Lee from the Jets was simply seen as depth. After a disappointing start in New York, Lee could add depth to the Vols' linebacker this year. The Chiefs signed former Dallas Cowboys tight end Damien Wilson, providing good depth at the position.
O'Daniel now finds himself on the field in his first preseason game in a slump. While most of the players on the field were not on the final roster, there was O'Daniel, looking longingly at the Bengals running wide into the end zone. Maybe it wasn't O'Daniel's job to cover for that guy, maybe.
If O'Daniel finds himself behind Wilson and Lee on the roster, where does he stand? The 2018 draft class is shaping up to be a dumpster fire, and O'Daniel's apparent lack of progress highlights those issues.
