Galil Ak 47 - The Israeli Galil began life as its progeny, the AK47. The AK47 has emerged as a superior weapon in many ways, requiring less maintenance, shorter and easier to use. The FAL is a long and heavy duty military rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. The AK47 was a short, light-action rifle chambered for the low-powered Soviet 7.62*39mm cartridge, so it was easier to use. When assessing the need for a new rifle with the advantages of the AK47, two Israeli designers, Uziel Gal and Yisrael Galil, worked on the proposed design.

Israel is unlikely to accept the AK47 for political and practical reasons. Israel looked to the US for military hardware, and the US was not supplying the Soviet Union with guns and ammunition. The Cold War was very cold in the 1960s, so Israel had to arm its infantry with NATO ammunition, not Warsaw Pact ammunition. A version of the AK47 was being developed in Finland in the 1960s, and it was the rifle Israeli designers looked to for inspiration. It is an RK 62 rifle that entered service with the Finnish Army in 1962.

Israel's original surname was Galil Balanishnikov, but many Israelis choose to change their names to reflect their Jewish heritage and their exile in Northern Europe. In construction, the Galil is based primarily on the Finnish RK62 pictured above. The trigger mechanism is based on the American M1 Garand, and the gas action mechanism is the Kalashnikov. The Galil used a Kalashnikov-style double-bolt mechanism operated by a piston and rod assembly in a cylinder over the barrel. When the gun is fired, the bolt is locked into the barrel and the pressure is gradually reduced as the bullet travels down the barrel. After the bullet passes through the gas port, some high-pressure gas valves are pushed into the cylinder at the top of the barrel and into the chrome-plated cylinder and rod mechanism. This drives the bolt carrier rearward, and during this movement the cam position on the bolt carrier mounts a cam on the bolt, rotates the bolt, causes it to unlock from the barrel, and allows the shot to be fired.
