Also known as .44 Magnum, it requires a strong, equally strong handgun or even a carbine to shoot it. A single-action pistol that combines the reliability and simplicity of a handgun with the energy of the famous magnum cartridge, Ruger Super Blackhawk is a gun for the task.

The .44 Remington Magnum cartridge was a progressive development of the .44 special round. The .44 Special round used in larger pistols is roughly equivalent to the .45 ACP in semi-automatic pistols, particularly the M1911A1 in US military service. Both are subsonic projectiles with a typical energy charge of 300 to 400 ft-lbs.
Renowned gun enthusiast and author Elmer Keith took the .44 special round and took it to new heights through extensive testing. As a result, the .44 Remington Magnum starts at 741 foot-pounds and can reach up to 1,400 foot-pounds of force, depending on load characteristics. This opens a new frontier of all powerful, large-bore revolvers suitable not only for hitting targets, but also for taking large prey, including deer, bears and other North American animals.
Although Smith & Wesson and Remington was persuaded to lag behind the new round, it was the first revolver actually released from Sturm Ruger. Ruger was the first to ship a .44 Magnum bullet and the new Blackhawk pistol was upgraded from the existing .357 Magnum pistol frame. The pistol was priced at $96 in November 1956—about $897 in 2019 prices, and in many ways only seventy dollars more than today's suggested retail price for the same pistol.
The current version, the New Model Super Blackhawk, is a pistol with an Old West design. The grip, frame, barrel and sight all resemble the Colt Single Action Army pistol, one of the most famous firearms in American history and the basis for western movies. The new model Super Blackhawk even comes in a version called "Bisley", a departure from the Colt Bisley, the low hammer Army Single Action for competitive target drill.
Ruger Redhawk 44 Magnum
A big bore pistol like the New Model Super Blackhawk must be strong to evoke the confidence of the user. Unlike small, high-capacity autoloading pistols, pistols are made entirely of steel. This is reflected in the revolver's weight: 7.5-inch-barreled Super Blackhawk weighs 48 ounces or three pounds unloaded. The version with a 10.5-inch barrel weighs 55 ounces. A full load of six turns in the cylinder that adds another three ounces.
New Model Super Blackhawk is not a small gun. In addition to the length of the barrel, the length of the pistol is also determined by the length of the cartridge, which has an overall length of 1.61 inches. The shortest version with a 3.75-inch barrel is approximately 10.5 inches long. The more popular 7.5-inch model is 13.38 inches long, with a 10.5-inch barrel at 16.38 inches at its largest. The pistol is sold in a blued model with light wood grips, a satin stainless model with dark wood grips, and a western style case as a distributor specific specialty with a hardened finish.
The Blackhawk is a single-action revolver, meaning the hammer must be set in order to fire. While this slows the reaction time, especially in hunting situations with large, dangerous game, the result is a slightly lighter pistol (compared to comparable double-action revolvers) and pulls the trigger only 3.75 pounds. This can help the gun stay on target even if the recoil is very heavy. A similar model, the Ruger Redhawk, is a double-action pistol.
The Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk pistol combines tradition and power, a design that harks back to the days of America's westward expansion while shooting one of the newest pistol calibers on the market. While not for everyone, .44 Magnum pistol has many applications, from target shooting to big game hunting. This and pistols like it will continue to fill the niche for a long time to come.

I have owned a Ruger Redhawk in the past but sold it on hard times. This is one of those revolvers that I regret selling but I can't live, drive or eat in it so it's gone. Mine is the 7.50 inch barrel model in blued steel, as opposed to the 4.20 inch barrel model shown below. This is an amazing piece.
Earlier this year (2019), my local range and gun club posted some rental guns for sale. A Ruger Redhawk in 4.20 "-barreled .44 Magnum was one of those revolvers, along with the Smith and Wesson Model 686 that came home with me a week ago.
Firing the 240g (16g) JHP Cor-Bon bullet produces 1,160 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle, or roughly 1,475 ft/sec (450 m/sec) when firing the 240g Federal. Hydra-Shok JHP, 1251 fps from a 4 "barrel is quite possible (source: Ballistics By inches). Regardless, many things happen when the hammer drops over a magnum cartridge. Of course, .44 special cartridges can be fired from the same pistol as Cor Bon 200 grains The The DPX bullet is good for a fairly tame shot at 972 feet per second. Considering that the same Ruger Redhawk in the .45 Colt pod can send a Cor Bon 200-grain JHP + P downrange at 875 feet per second from a barrel of the same length, an additional 100 feet per second from .44 special. , still pales compared to .44 Magnum loading.
It's been a few years since I fired a .44 magnum on both single- and double-action platforms. At 48 ounces (3 pounds), the 4.20" barrel of the Ruger Redhawk is not light, but the weight is necessary to help soften the recoil that a .44 Magnum bullet can produce with this short barrel. Moving about 1124 feet per second in the barrel, the cartridge A 9mm (124 grain) can produce about six foot-pounds of recoil energy. A .44 Magnum (240 grain) moving through the barrel at 1239 feet per second can produce 11.9 to 12.4 foot-pounds of recoil energy. Introduced in 1980, the Redhawk was an enlarged and improved version of its target model, the Security-Six, with squared stock grips, adjustable sights, and barrel lengths of 5.5 and 7.5 inches. The 4.20 inch barrel version was later introduced (according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_Redhawk, it was to meet the Canadian guidelines for the minimum barrel length) and this is the version of the club gun offered in my range.
One advantage of rental ranged revolvers is that they fire less than semi-automatic pistols. We have an expired Ruger Redhawk case, but this pistol does not. People shoot the Ruger Redhawk for two reasons; nothing for pleasure. Curiosity for one, experimentation for the second. Some people have never fired a .44 Magnum and want to see how it shoots. Handloaders love to experiment, and it's better to experiment on other people's weapons than your own, as people who roll their own guns sometimes have a tendency to repeat from the hot side.
This example of a Ruger Redhawk has some scratches from normal wear and wear from being a rental range. But as a stainless steel firearm, a little polishing and polishing can remove all but the deepest scratches. I haven't bought it as a show piece, but it should be mechanically sound.
The 'Hawk' was certainly dirty when I brought it home (see below). The facial roller was probably never cleaned and was the first to be attacked. Using a small amount of Wilson Combat carbon remover, a chemically treated cloth, and a bronze brush, it remains to be seen how many bullets are removed from the surface of the cylinder and the forcing cone area.

Strangely, the hole is clean, maybe cleaned by one of the field workers; however, it was cleared by Hoppe and soon became available. Next, the grip is raised and the entire pistol is extensively wiped.
The grip has been replaced by Hogue® Monogrip® which is larger and provides more room for the hand to grip. Hogue® Monogrip®; however, it actually turned out to be too big for my hand. The finger groove is positioned my hand very low on the rear strap, especially since I like to grip as high as possible with the Ruger Redhawk's high bore axis.
While I love the Hogue® Monogrip® for the finger grooves and energy absorbing material, the Ruger Redhawk Square Classic Panel Super Rosewood Checkered by Altamont Grip (shown below)
