The Camp Roberts Fire Department has conducted several prescribed burns at Camp Roberts, but this was the first coordinated effort at a designated Camp Roberts site, said Reed, who has been with the PoM fire department for five years.

"This particular unit or area that we burned was considered the highest risk because of the overall wind direction and fuel load," Reed said. “It was a small piece of the pie. The idea is to come full circle in the next few years.

When firefighters reach the end of the circle in the next few years, they plan to start over, Reed said.

Camp Roberts firefighters have been watching the weather closely to determine the best day to burn, Read said.

Fires Damage Home In Paso Robles And Vegetation At Camp Roberts

"Everything was in our favor," Reed said. "A cold front came in a few days ago, so it gave the vegetation enough moisture to not cause too many problems, but was dry enough to put the fire out." plants".

It's important to note that prescribed burns have environmental benefits, not just safety, Reed said.

Burns, for example, opens up seed pods and returns nutrients to the soil to help grow a new generation of native plants, Reed said. This helps the soil retain moisture better and makes it more resistant to fire.
