Balboa Naval Hospital Pharmacy - Stronghold Engineering, Inc. was the prime contractor for this Design-Build project, which included the upgrade and renovation of Building 1H, Nursing Tower P-1, and Nursing Tower R-1 into a 272-bed Amazing dual-tasker intensive care facility. on the treatment of patients and the training of medical personnel at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. Naval Medical Center San Diego is the largest military hospital in the United States in the West and supports the most technologically advanced and comprehensive military medical system. With more than 6,000 employees, NMCSD provides health care to more than 500,000 people in the San Diego area.
The project included an HVAC upgrade for a highly complex medical environment and included modifications, repairs, upgrades, and cleaning of existing HVAC systems in various areas throughout Building 1. Key elements of the plan included vacuum areas, infection control, and security measures in Building 1. Pharmacy and other premises of the hospital. The whole work was divided into six separate working groups, with continuous methods of stay and prevention of infection according to the strict requirements of health care. Upgraded systems included all air handling equipment and supply, return and exhaust HVAC components, as well as associated control, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and other systems. Stronghold Engineering provided temporary HVAC systems to maintain hospital occupancy and critical operations during demolition, repair and cleanup, and electrical upgrades.

The temporary system consisted of packaged air-handling units with controls and cleaning located outside the unit and on the roof of the facility with makeshift ducts leading to various departments of the building. NMCSD infection control requirements and procedures have been implemented by temporary systems to meet critical health care needs. As an electrical contractor over 30 years ago, Stronghold did most of the electrical work themselves.
